Abstract
A re-treatment by double or triple regimen with ethionamide, cycloserine, and
pyrazinamide was evaluated in 27 patients of advanced Primary drug-resistant
pulmonary tuberculosis who had had 6 to 7 months of therapy with Primary drungs.
Reversal of infectiousness was observed in 64% of far-advanced patients.
There was no deaths, Four Patients were discontinued ethionamide because of severe
gastrointestinal troubles. Liver toxicity to pyrazinamide as evidenced by abnormal liver
function test occurred in one patient. There was no jaundice. Several patients were
required to discontinue certain drungs temporarily. As regards to tolerance to the
secondary drungs the of the physician is of very important value and considerable toxic
effects can be overtime by the strong confidence and discipline of the patients.
Several factors which might influence the therapeutic effects were discussed. Among
those factors. the rapid gaining of resistance to individual drug seems significant in
treatment failure. It is believed to be a mistake to add simply one new drug several
months apart.
